Using an intuitive process, I create abstract, imaginative art inspired by a love of nature, biology and New Orleans’ verdant environs. Vibrant color, layered surfaces and lush textures are used to make intriguing and inviting alternative worlds or invented natural processes. This is a way to express the awe, amazement and the sense of delight I have for the complexity and strangeness found in nature. My diverse body of work includes acrylic paintings, mixed media collage and fiber art. The last several years have been spent focusing on acrylic painting and mixed media collage.
My paintings emerge out of an enjoyment of the painting process. Materials and process guide how the work unfolds. There is usually very little planning. Experimentation and exploration is what excites me as an artist. The process is a journey and the end point is always a surprise. It usually begins by applying color and arranging paper, fabric or paint skins out of my materials stash in an improvisational manner. Or sometimes textured surface are created using various acrylic pastes or gels before adding the first layers of color and other materials. Acrylic paint and painting mediums are applied in varying ways from thick impasto to dripped, scraped, and thinly glazed passages. Mark making includes loose and painterly brushwork, controlled line work, dripped paint and scribbled drawing with a variety of media. The unexpected and serendipitous magic that happens when working this way brings immediacy and liveliness to the work.
